Last summer my husband had the opportunity to visit the Netherlands for a work trip. However, the trip almost didn't happen. My husband, Eric, didn't have a passport and his boss thought that he did.
We tried every possible route we could think of to get an expedited passport, but we kept running into obstacles. In desperation, Eric took to Facebook to see if anyone in the social media world had any ideas. One of his cousins actually chimed in and gave Eric the name of a travel company his business would go to in similar situations.
Eric contacted this business and because of Covid they hadn't been able to do expedited passports for some time, but as luck would have it, the following Monday they were allowed to start doing them again, but it could only be a certain number per week or something and it was a first-come, first-serve basis.
Eric did whatever he could to be one of the first faces that day and he got all of his information turned in and we thought things were good to go. We then got the news that the document we thought was his birth certificate, wasn't actually able to be used for passports - even though the document said it was. I guess rules and things can change after 40+ years.
Once again we figured the Netherlands trip was a no-go, but the girl from the travel agency said that if we could get a new, legal birth certificate in about a 48-hour period, the passport would still get to Eric on time.
Eric made a call to the state he was born in and they wouldn't be able to mail it in the given timeframe. I figured that if we left immediately, we could make the drive and get back in time. Eric decided he'd rather fly, however, so, in a matter of only hours, we were on a flight that wasn't planned for when we woke up that morning.
It was quite an adventure and I'm glad I took some photos at the airport and on the plane. Because when I had the chance to work with the collection, Your Captain Speaking, I actually had some photos to use.
I also find it funny that I just recently scrapped a page about the rental car from this trip. I swear none of that was planned ahead of time. After I finished scrapping this page, I found another kit on my computer that I had planned to use with these photos. Oh well. It just means I'll have to take another trip on a plane sometime.
