My husband has only one living grandparent. He lost his paternal grandma when he was only 4. His paternal grandfather passed away in 2005 leaving him with only his maternal grandparents, but they lived all the way in Nebraska.
Even with all that distance they took many trips to Nebraska throughout the years and my husband said he always felt closer to his maternal grandparents, even with the distance. I loved getting the chance to visit his grandparents every few years and they were always so good to my kids and never made me feel out of place.
My husbands maternal grandmother left this earth in October of 2017 and my mother-in-law brought her father back to Utah so that she could care for him. We've loved the chance to get to know him even better and it's given me a chance to feel the same kind of light I always felt from my maternal grandpa when I was young. This man really is doing well for his age. He remembers my kids' names and has beat a few health scares in the past few years. He is just such an amazing human.
Because Grandpa has lived a full, long life, he really doesn't need anything, which makes gift giving a bit difficult. This year I decided I'd make him a scrapbook page and frame it for him. I gave it some thinking and decided I'd do some then/now type pictures. I asked my for my husband's input for a lot of this layout and I am happy with the turn out.
Giving this gift to Grandpa was quite humbling. I wasn't sure how he'd react, but this sweet man started to cry, which made me cry a bit and I felt a little bit bad for making him cry.
